The voice, and the size of the words

Two settings matter more than all the others, and both are worth doing together, with the person whose app it is.

The voice

It is their voice now. People have strong feelings about being spoken for in a voice they dislike, and this is one of the few things they get to choose.

In Settings → Language & voice there is a voice for each language. Open the list and you get one row per person, with the available qualities underneath.

Selecting a voice speaks a sample immediately, so you can hear it before deciding rather than guessing from a name. Try several. Let them pick.

Getting more voices

Loquela cannot download voices itself — that is something iOS keeps to itself. The better-quality voices are installed from the device's own settings:

Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices, then choose the language and download the one you want.

Once it is installed, it appears in Loquela's list the next time you look. If a voice is not installed, Loquela shows it as unavailable rather than offering something it cannot use.

The size of the words

The text size slider is on the first Settings screen — deliberately not hidden behind a door, because it is the setting people need most and are least likely to go hunting for.

Drag it and the sample above changes as you go. It changes text everywhere in the app, not just on one screen.

Set it larger than feels necessary. This is read in bad light, in waiting rooms, by someone who may be tired or unwell, and nobody has ever complained that the words were too easy to read.
